Today is the beginning of Holy Week in which the church gives witness to the life of Jesus during his last week on earth. For many pastors (including myself), we are definitely earning our money's worth in this week!Lots of us will be participating in lots of events all week. It began today as I preached from the lectionary text in John 12:12-16. The sermon was entitled "Who are you looking for?" as we examined our motives for Jesus's coming. I gave them different situations; some of you are looking for UNC to win the NCAA Basketball Championship, some of you are looking for a personal bailout or stimulus package, and some of you are waiting for a king to deliver you. And some of us (like the Jewish authorities) don't really want Jesus to show up at all because it would ruin our control over things. But Jesus has come to pay the price in his life for us. I thought they took it well!
My week is pretty busy. Here is what I am up to -
Today- preach for Palm Sunday and serve communion to the homebound.
Tomorrow (Monday) - Preacher for White Memorial Presbyterian Church's Holy Week Service at 12:10 p.m. AND 6 p.m.
Thursday- Preach for our church's Maundy Thursday service.
Sunday (Resurrection Day) - Participate in the Downtown Raleigh Churches' Easter Sunrise Service at 6:30 a.m. ( I am giving the Pastoral Prayer), and then preach at my church for the 11 a.m. service.
This is on top of other pastoral duties and my son is on spring break from the Wake County Public School System, although Monday and Tuesday he will be in school due to making up snow days. So you see I will be busy and preached out by the time Resurrection Day is over ;-) Then the next few days I will be preparing for my next Vice-Moderator trips to the National Pastor's Sabbath and preaching the Associate Pastor's Conference at Montreat.
As you begin your Holy Week observances I pray that you will experience the life of Jesus's last days and rejoice at his resurrection from the grave. I'll leave you with this prayer -
Let us pray
for a closer union with Christ during this holy season.
Almighty, ever-living God,
you have given the human race
Jesus Christ our Savior
as a model of humility.
He fulfilled your will
by becoming one of us and giving his life on the cross.
Help us to bear witness to you
by following his example of suffering
and make us worthy to share in his resurrection.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, you Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
