Last night I made a visit to First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield, NC which is about 30 miles east of Raleigh. Actually this visit was a long time in coming because I had to postpone the invitation twice and I promised myself that I would visit before the end of this year. The pastor, Rev. Joe Hester has been there a little over a year and really has the church on track to do great things!! They really had the Christmas spirit and it brought back memories because they had a Christmas tree in the sanctuary just like my home church had at one time.
This was FPC's monthly church dinner night and we began with the good stuff - food! It was a fundraiser for FPC's youth who are planning to attend Faith in 3D, a huge multi-denominational youth event at Walt Disney World in Florida. Since it was cold outside the homemade soups and grilled cheese sandwiches came in handy!! Thanks to the cooks who did a great job :-) I had a great time meeting people and seeing others who I have not seen in years. After the good eats I made my standard presentation on the major actions at General Assembly and we had a time for questions and answers. The people were very attentive and very interested in what was happening at the national level as well as how they will be affected locally. In the picture above, Eve Creech (immediately to my right) was an alternate commissioner to GA but had to fill in for a commissioner who had a death in her family the week before GA. Eve did a great job filling in (she was placed on the Form of Government Assembly Committee) and is excited about being a commissioner to GA 2010 in Minneapolis, MN - where she will see Bruce and I walk off into the sunset!! ;-)
This is probably the last GA interpretation I will do and I was glad to share it with FPC. I wish Joe and the congregation many blessings in the future!
